General grading information PDF Print E-mail
Especially at the beginning of your martial arts training you may not realise when you are ready to be tested for your next level. The following information in part explains the requirements.

Common for all gradings

· Age and physical ability will be taken into consideration on all gradings.

· Students will be graded on their attention to correct technique and stances and enthusiastic delivery.

· All gradings will include techniques, combinations and kata from previous gradings.

· To confirm an understanding of basic techniques a demonstration of the application of basic techniques may be required.

· All grading students are to submit their current licence and record book.

Mid-grade assessments

During each term several in-class assessments are held to monitor the progress of each student. For children a black stripe is added to the end of the belt for competence at the following skills.

Stripe 1 - Stances, Punches, Strikes, Blocks and Kicks

Stripe 2 - Kata

Stripe 3 - Combinations

Half gradings for children of primary school age

“Half gradings” are available for 8th Kyu to 6th Kyu for the younger students (generally of primary school age). This is to make each progression more gradual and achievable. It also provides encouragement and the reward of a new belt and certificate for achieving a considerable level of proficiency.

“First half” grade— one stripe required on the belt. Will be tested on stances, punches, strikes, blocks and kicks

“Second half” grade — three stripes required on the belt. Will be tested on first half requirements plus combinations and kata (i.e. as per full grade requirements)
